ERS Emergency Services in the UK.
Thursday, September 24rd, 2009 - 16.01 GMT.
ERS Emergency Services is part of the ETT International Group. As our CEO, Marcus Turley, has stated time and time again, we have been working very hard with the British Government to try to get a national emergency SMS number launched using the ERS resources that we have ready and available. Unfortunately, it has not been possible for ERS to provide a free emergency service across the country without government support and subsidies.
A recent news announcement from the UK Government is that they are working with several telecommunication companies to provide an SMS emergency service via one national number '999' and a pilot of the service will be tested from the 14th September 2009 with the service to be launched some time in 2010. As yet, not all mobile service providers have joined the new national service but our CEO, Marcus Turley is very pleased that the government is getting closer to enabling Deaf, Hard of Hearing or speech-impaired people with national access to the emergency services in the UK via SMS.
Please visit the UK emergency website for news on when the new 999 SMS service will be launched nationwide, which mobile service providers are taking part and whether yours is one of them together with instructions on how to use the service.
As a result of this news, ERS will no longer be providing emergency SMS access. However you are still welcome to use the ERS Relay service to contact the UK emergency services by clicking on the red 'Emergency' button on your Relay Panel. The ERS Operators will relay your emergency call but you must make yourself aware of our terms and conditions when using this service. Click here to read those terms and conditions or scroll down to the bottom of this page.
We recommend that you keep visiting our ERS Emergency website for updates about the latest technologies available to you and advice on what you should do or not do in an emergency situation.
You must make sure that the home address details that you register with ERS is up to date at all times in case you have a problem at home and need the help of the emergency services there.
If you are making an emergency call while you are away from home then you will need to provide full details of your location by following the on-line instructions on the Relay panel after you have clicked on the red 'Emergency' button. Remember to be as clear and specific as possible when providing details. If you are not able to connect to our service for any reason, such as you have lost access to the internet, you should try to contact the emergency services in another way i.e. asking a friend or neighbour to dial 999 for you.
The emergency system in use by ERS Relay Services may rely on manual transmission of location information which has inherent risks of error. ERS Relay Services cannot and will not be responsible for any delay in availability of an ERS Operator or errors in the transmission of your location which delay the arrival of the emergency personnel in response to your call.
ERS makes no warranties, express or implied, related to any emergency calls.
